What does side length mean?

Side length describes the geometric length of each of the six equal sides; it is not the overall width. That distinction matters because a regular hexagon is wider in one direction than the other. The live Bounds readout gives the actual rectangular footprint of the generated block pattern, so you can check that it fits your build area before placing blocks.

The conversion is pixel-based, so rounding may add or remove one block from a staircase at some sizes. That is expected: the tool prioritizes mirror symmetry and even visual proportions. Increasing the side length gives the diagonal edges more steps and makes the finished hexagon appear smoother from normal viewing distance.

Flat-top vs. pointy-top hexagons

A flat-top hexagon has horizontal edges at the top and bottom, with points on the left and right. This orientation is useful for broad halls, arenas and floor plans with a clear horizontal entrance. A pointy-top hexagon rotates the same geometry by 90 degrees, placing points at the top and bottom and straight edges on the left and right.

Both orientations use the same side length and approximately the same number of blocks. Only the footprint direction changes. If your available plot is wider than it is tall, compare both layouts and choose the orientation whose Bounds fit the space and line up best with nearby paths or walls.

Why a cut-corner square is not a regular hexagon

A common Minecraft shortcut is to build a rectangle and cut identical triangles from its four corners. That produces six visible edges, but it does not automatically make all six sides equal. The horizontal sections can end up much longer than the diagonal staircases, creating a stretched shape that looks wrong when viewed from above.

Hexagons create a more engineered look than circles while still feeling less boxy than ordinary rectangles. Builders use them for bee-themed bases, modern houses, wizard towers, observatories, storage hubs, arenas, central plazas, farms and modular rooms. Several matching hexagons can also form a honeycomb settlement or a repeating floor pattern.

The blueprint is especially helpful when six entrances or spokes must be spaced evenly. Mark the centre axes first, complete the outline, and then connect paths, bridges or rooms to corresponding sides. Tips for building the shape accurately

Clear a rectangular plot at least as large as the displayed Bounds. Mark the horizontal and vertical centre lines with temporary contrasting blocks. Start at one extreme point, copy each straight run and staircase, then mirror it across the centre before filling the next section. Check opposite points are the same distance from the centre.
